
Queen Latifah, was born Dana Elaine Owens, March 18, 1970 in Newark. Latifah was the second child born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is most well-known for her social activism, acting abilities and her ability to rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the title "delicate and sensitive" when she was eight years old. Latifah sang with the choir of the church of Shiloh located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. She had her debut public performance in which she sang "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz. Latifah's mom was a major influencer and she kept in touch with the students and the music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was contacted by Latifah's mother to perform during the dance.
